Sailing
Block Island is known in the boater’s community for it’s superb sailing conditions and safe harbors. Visitors from all over have been traveling to the island by private vessel for many years. In fact many make the seasonal voyage year after year.
New Harbor is an enclosed salt pond with three marinas each offering facilities for boaters. Town moorings and anchorage are also available. A launch service is offered in the New Harbor seasonally. Taxis service to town is readily available, or walking is roughly fifteen minutes.
Old Harbor is the island’s main town. The Harbor itself is protected by breakwalls and has limited dockage and anchoring space within. Old Harbor is also the landing area for ferry services from Point Judith, RI and New London, CT.
Raceweek, a popular sailboat regatta, is taking place from June 21st through June 26th of 2009. This year will be The Storm Trysail Club’s 23rd biennial race. Over 180 boats and 1500 sailors are expected to participate. Take in the spectacular views of colorful sails on the horizon as they make their way around the island every day during raceweek.
